This is the same radar picture as on the home page: all of Slovenia at once, with a red ring marking the place. The red ring marks Bovec, at the top of the Soča Valley. Kobarid and Tolmin lie further down the valley, within about 25 kilometres. The picture also covers the Soča Valley, the Bovec basin and the Julian Alps. Drag the slider to see where the rain is coming from.

Bovec lies in the ARSO forecast region Bovško. ARSO writes forecasts by region and warnings by area; the warning area for the Soča Valley is north-western Slovenia, shown below.

What this radar shows

The colours show reflectivity: how strongly the radar beam is sent back by raindrops, snowflakes and hail in the air, measured in dBZ. They tell you how hard it is raining at the moment of the measurement. They do not tell you how much rain has fallen, so they are not rainfall totals.

ARSO, the Slovenian Environment Agency, measures. This site shows what ARSO measured. A new picture arrives every five minutes, and the animation plays the last two hours.

A radar looks at the air above a place, not at the ground. It can show rain that dries before it lands, it can miss low drizzle under the beam, and it cannot tell rain from snow. Every picture is a measurement from the past, the newest a few minutes old. It is not a forecast; the forecast maps above are a separate model.
